Textiles Conservation: Beaded Bag

Shropshire

Current project

Beaded bag.png

Condition

Body

There is a large amount of damage to the decorative outside layer at the base of the bag, possibly caused by rodents. This has removed a section of fabric, and left a large number of beads at risk of being lost in addition to those already gone. The majority of the body appears to be structurally sound, including the silk lining which has been protected from light by the outer layers.

Opening Mechanism

The tortoise shell has broken on one side, allowing that side to open excessively, which may cause damage to the fabric if not treated. The hook and clasp are both iron, and heavily corroded. As yet this appears not to have damaged the structure too badly, nor has it transferred to the fabric.

Strap

The silk lining has perished and shattered, and been mostly lost, with the remaining pieces at risk. The cotton scrim supporting the beads is severely damaged in some areas, including one section where it is almost completely detached. Due to the degradation of the base material, a number of beads have been lost.

Treatment Aims

To secure the areas of damage to prevent loss, to stabilise weakened areas, and to remake the missing section.
