Condition
The top part of the Chamberlain Casket, shown above, had tarnished unevenly and irregularly. There was also evidence of a coating having been applied and partially removed, leaving gaps that had then oxidised.
Treatment Aims
To even the colour of the silver plates and remove the coating causing the problem.

Treatment
Solvent testing was done to determine a suitable way of removing the coating. Acetone was found to be effective, and also removed the tarnish. The large silver panels were therefore swabbed with acetone. No further treatment was applied, as the panels should tarnish evenly in the future, protecting the silver beneath, and fitting with the main body of the object.
